Don't Have Genetic Testing Yet?

Updated: Jan 22, 2020

Finding solutions for chronic illness, psychiatric disorder or autism is inherently complex, but it is possible. It takes careful attention to diet. Double handfuls of nutritional supplements will not overcome a problem in your diet. Usually you have to avoid gluten, casein, sugar, starchy foods, and bad fats. You need to pay attention to how your body feels when you eat a food. Perfectly good foods may not be okay for you. Your body needs optimal food put into it in order to run well.

Chronic illnesses are complex and you are likely to go through layers of improvement. You need  to do genetic testing of your entire methylation pathway, not just the MTHFR gene.  From this testing you find out what your genetic blocks to making methyl groups are. Then you supplement to bypass those blocks. If all you have is testing for the MTHFR gene, you are missing the rest of the very important genetic information in the pathway that allows you to make methyl groups, put immune function into gear, and detox heavy metals and other problem substances.

The methylation pathway is the intersection of several important pathways, like pathways for making neurotransmitters, for making glutathione, and for getting toxins excreted into your urine. You may not get things right in your body if you are only paying attention to one mutation.

Getting the right balance in your methyl group producing pathway gives you methyl groups that enhance your immune function so you can fight off infection. When you have methyl groups you can do the methylation reactions that happen a billion times a second in your cells. You can activate and deactivate neurotransmitters and regulate the function of your genes. You can methylate the membranes of your nerve cells so that they can let in supporting nutrition and excrete waste. You can deactivate histamine and convert oxalate into energy. When you get the methylation biochemistry right, your body just works better.

Below are some of the issues that a lack of good function of the methyl group producing pathway can cause:

No amount of hit and miss supplementation is going to resolve one or several of the issues that mutations in the genes in this pathway may cause. You need to know what your mutations are and have an organized plan for resolving symptoms. Your clinician should develop the plan. Your clinician should know about the genetics of the entire methyl group producing pathway, not just about the MTHFR mutation itself, and should have asked for a comprehensive test. Then they have to do biochemical testing in order to inform themselves and you of biochemical conditions in your body. If your situation is complex, there is more to resolving it than special forms of folate and B12.

If you would like to get my input, I can offer you an Exploratory Conversation. It does not involve filling out lengthy history forms or becoming my patient. I answer your questions, look at whatever data you want to send, and discuss whatever you like in the time frame that we have. Exploratory Conversations are scheduled for 30 minutes. The fee for this service is $129. You will not be invoiced, sent a super bill, or sent written information on whatever it is I may tell you.

Exploratory Conversations are meant for people who are not my patients who would like to talk to me to see if I am the doctor for them, or to get my input about their condition or treatment. They are phone calls. They are not office visits. Even if you live within commuting distance of my office in Burbank, California, this conversation takes place over the phone. It is not even a Skype call. The idea is to streamline the communication of information so that effective work can happen in one half hour.

Email us. Let us know that you want an Exploratory Conversation and we will send you the information about how to schedule one...

What people are saying about my work:

I shudder at the thought of what my family would be like without Dr. Mullan. Thankfully, with her help we have stopped my husbands chronic 30 year battle with kidney stones. He is no longer forming them and is stone free. My thyroid is now working normally, my body temperature is almost normal and my hair has grown back. My oldest daughter's Autism is in the process of being reversed and her hair pulling has stopped. The greatest blessing from our good health is the birth of my second daughter Ava, now one year old. At 50 years old I carried her to term.  One of my doctors commented to me saying “ you are carrying this baby like a 22 year old.” Yes I am because of Dr. Mullan and working on my methylation pathway.  One by one she is knocking off symptoms and bringing us back to health. The future is bright! Thank you, Dr. Mullan, for the work you do. - JVW

Wow.  I feel great.  Thank you for your help.  It’s amazing really.  Like a light turned on.  Curious to see what the next tests show.   To ride this peak indefinitely is my goal.  Ha.  I have energy again.  Yay!  Really grateful. - DG

Wow!  I have to tell you, it’s so nice to hear good news especially about a child.  Anxiety, OCD and a host of other mental/psychiatric symptoms have been a huge hurdle for me.  So to hear this story of all those awful symptoms totally going away is such a bright light for me!!!! -TR

"Fantastic, caring, smart, savvy doc.  I worked with Dr. Mullan for a couple of years to help MTHFR mutations and their associating expressions!  To say the least!  She's  brilliant.  At that time she had weekly calls for her patients - free - where we could ask questions and she would reply.  What doctors do this?  She does.  She's also an animal lover and is right on about the way she practices medicine.  I highly recommend her.  In good health!” - MG "You're in good hands with Dr. Mullan. She is intelligent, caring and knowledgable, spending much time with you. She thinks outside the box to achieve wellness for you. She really knows what's going on inside your body.” - MS "Dr. Nancy Mullan is a beautiful person. She is an expert in her field and has helped our family so much. I am very grateful to her.  She came highly recommended and I know why. I would recommend her and her website for information re: healing from a genetics point of view. Thank you Dr. Mullan for everything.” - GD "Dr.Mullan has helped me with issues that I have struggled with for years.  She is knowledgable and practical.  I would recommend her to others.” - BC
