MTHFR+ and ADHD

Attention Deficit Disorder is the most frequently diagnosed childhood psychiatric disorder in the US. It affects 17 million people and is trending upward. Symptoms include brief attention span, hyperactivity, poor concentration, lack of impulse control, impatience, careless mistakes, disorganization and lack of follow-through, among others. Girls are more frequently inattentive, while boys tend to be hyperactive. School is a nightmare. Tasks that require concentration are nearly impossible, which leads to frustration, irritability, agitation and sometimes recklessness.  Parents start tearing their hair out and/or become mean. Kids feel broken and as if they are bad. They and their parents are suffering.

This symptom constellation compels responsible parents to DO SOMETHING. The universal mainstream recommendation is Ritalin, Adderall, and finally antidepressants or whatever pharmaceutical works.

It is a relief that pharmaceuticals often do remove the symptoms, but there are consequences, not only for the individual but for schools and the community. PET scan studies done on minors using Ritalin are highly abnormal. And it isn't really equitable to have students using amphetamines competing with their unmedicated peers. Schools in which competition and success matters are scrambling to work this out. The street value of Adderall is astronomical, non medicated people wanting the energy, focus and alert attentiveness that the medication provides.

The underlying causes of what has been called 'minimal brain dysfunction' are not addressed in the mainstream paradigm. The triggers for this syndrome start in the gut, as so many disorders do. Individuals with ADHD often have impaired digestion, environmental and food sensitivities, nutritional insufficiencies, heavy metal toxicity, fatty acid,

and amino acid imbalances and sensitivity to food additives. Sugar, one of the sacred cows of the mainstream, is usually an issue, as gluten and casein also may be. The elimination of junk food and starchy foods is pivotal.

All of the symptoms of ADHD are associated with MTHFR mutations, including the impaired immunity that predisposes ADHD sufferers to have an increased incidence of ear infections. ADHD is on the autism spectrum, and 98% of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder have at least one MTHFR mutation.

If you have a child with ADHD, and he is either young enough for you to be able to control his diet or he wants a solution badly enough to eliminate problem foods, I can help. Diet is the foundation of heath no matter what you are trying to treat. Double handfuls of nutritional supplements will not overcome a problem with diet. The solution also involves getting genetic testing, subsequent additional testing to determine body biochemistry, and nutritional supplements to address the problems uncovered.

If you want expert help personalized to your child's unique ADHD genetics and body chemistry, you can get an Exploratory Conversation with me. This is a 30-minute conversation in which I will listen to his health issues, review what test results you have, and make recommendations about what I think you should do. You can tell me all of the things you have tried and I will give you my input about what you can consider next.

The fee for this service is $129. It is easy to set a time for this conversation, and it can save you weeks or months of doing the wrong thing, lurching around in the dark with a clinician who doesn’t know anything about the genetics or molecular biology of MTHFR+ and ADHD. You may be dealing with conditions in your body that are confusing and difficult to understand. I can help you cut through all of that and give you clarifying input that moves you in the right direction.

I have a free, downloadable ebook at NancyMullanMD.com that gives you further detail about methylation issues. Click here to download.

I look forward to being able to help,

What people like you are saying about Dr. Mullan’s work:

I shudder at the thought of what my family would be like without Dr. Mullan. Thankfully, with her help, we have stopped my husband's chronic 30 year battle with kidney stones. He is no longer forming them and is stone free. My thyroid is now working normally, my body temperature is almost normal and my hair has grown back. My oldest daughter's Autism is in the process of being reversed and her hair pulling has stopped. The greatest blessing from our good health is the birth of my second daughter Ava, now one-year-old. At 50 years old I carried her to term. One of my doctors commented to me saying “ you are carrying this baby like a 22-year-old.” Yes, I am because of Dr. Mullan and working on my methylation pathway. One by one she is knocking off symptoms and bringing us back to health. The future is bright! Thank you, Dr. Mullan, for the work you do.

Wow. I feel great. Thank you for your help. It's amazing really. Like a light turned on. Curious to see what the next tests show. To ride this peak indefinitely is my goal. Ha. I have energy again. Yay!

Really grateful,

Wow! I have to tell you, this was such an uplifting session. It’s so nice to hear good news, especially about a child. Anxiety, OCD and a host of other mental/psychiatric symptoms have been a huge hurdle for me. So to hear this story of all those awful symptoms totally going away is such a bright light for me!!!!

Fantastic, caring, smart, savvy doc. I worked with Dr. Mullan for a couple of years to help MTHFR mutations and their associating expressions! To say the least! She's brilliant. At that time she had weekly calls for her patients - free - where we could ask questions and she would reply. What doctors do this? She does. She's also an animal lover and is right on about the way she practices medicine. I highly recommend her. In good health!
